Abstract: The art of calligraphy and geographical distribution of its practitioners are closely related. In the South Song Dynasty (1127–1279),calligraphers were geographically wide-spread,in the dotted pattern in some places while in areal pattern in others. The most notable locations for concentrated calligrapher population included the Taihu Lake and the Qiantang River, or the modern south Jiangsu Province and the north Zhejiang Province. Of them all,Lin'an Prefecture (modern Hangzhou) was the most important. These characteristics had their profound historical roots and are highly attributable to the political, economic, cultural and other factors of the South Song Dynasty,an aspect of calligraphy culture that was to continue influencing both calligraphy styles and geographical distribution of calligraphers in the following three dynasties - the Yuan, the Ming and the Qing(1279–1911).
