Abstract: King Ban Hui is a rising star in Malaysian Chinese literature and a prominent representative of the new generation of Chinese-Malaysian writers, who consistently focuses his creative lens on the spiritual world of ordinary individuals. Memory writing serves as his narrative strategy when delving into his characters' inner worlds and as a fundamental path to create hope amidst despair. In his novel Artificial Girl, his concern for the human psyche is conveyed through the traumatic memories of diverse fictional characters. By constructing various types of spatial settings, the novelist imbues individual memories with a distinctive “spatial sensibility.” The employment of modernist narrative techniques further enhances the work's unique aesthetic style in its exploration of memory. The memory writing in Artificial Girl not only reflects King Ban Hui's courage to confront trauma but also highlights his efforts to uphold the hope of life. As a text that profoundly examines the relationship between “self” and “memory,” this work not only lays a new milestone in King Ban Hui's literary journey but also contributes fresh momentum to the development of Malaysian Chinese literature.
