Progress of Research on Biochar-Based Materials in Organic Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: With global water pollution becoming increasingly serious, developing efficient, low-cost and environment-friendly water pollution control materials has become a research hotspot. In view of the frequent occurrence of organic pollution incidents, it is urgent to explore effective strategies to remove organic pollutants in water environment. Biochar-based materials have shown great application potential in water pollution control because of their wide sources of raw materials, simple preparation process, excellent physical and chemical properties and good environmental compatibility. In this paper, the raw materials, physical and chemical properties, preparation technology and modification methods of biochar-based materials are systematically reviewed, and the research progress in the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), endocrine disruptors (EDCs), antibiotics, pesticides, dyes and other organic pollutants is elaborated in detail. Moreover, the adsorption and degradation mechanisms of biochar-based materials are analyzed, and the current research challenges and future development direction discussed in order to provide reference for large-scale application of biochar-based materials in water pollution control.
