Abstract: This study takes as example the area around Mishi Street, Chuxiong and focuses on issues regarding preservation and renovation of ordinary old blocks. The paper first defines ordinary old block before proceeding to suggest measures to effectively preserve and renovate the existing ordinary old blocks for the multiple purposes of preserving blocks, improving environment and promoting development. Examples of blocks around Mishi Street are used for in-depth analysis of the value and environmental problems of blocks in question, so that concrete preservation and renovation operations of these blocks are clarified. After a focused research on three aspects-commercial development, preservation and renovation of buildings, and preservation and renovation of street environment-of the blocks in question, implementation strategies are proposed. It is hopeful that the strategies proposed herein can be of reference value to renovation projects of areas around Mishi Street, Chuxiong and other similar ordinary old urban blocks.
