Abstract: In the ancient society, home, family temple and other spaces did not only have architectural or physical meaning, but also ethical, ideological and humanistic value. Because of the wide-spread ideas of superiority, inferiority and hierarchy and their penetration in daily life, family, temple, principal rooms, wing rooms and other human spaces were given different ethical meanings. In contemporary Chinese literature, these spaces are written with great meticulousness, especially in novels set in clan affairs, so as to reveal the multidimensional ethical boundaries of the human body in such spaces.

Key words: ancient Chinese society, space ethics, family temple, clan novel
