Influence of Ethnic Socialization on Well-being of Ethnic Minority Students: Examining the Mediating Role of Ethnic Identity and Cultural Orientation

Abstract: The thesis explores the correlation between ethnic socialization, ethnic identity, cultural orientation and well-being for ethnic minority students. The ethnic socialization experience questionnaire, multi-group ethnic identity measurement, the Chinese version of the individualism-collectivism scale and the pluralistic well-being questionnaire are used for this study on 960 ethnic minority students. It has been discovered that there are different impacting mechanisms between ethnic identity, cultural orientation and well-being of ethnic minority students in dimensions of ethnic socialization. The intermediary relationships are closely related with cultural orientation, which is divided into individualism and collectivism. The thesis explores the influence of ethnic socialization on the sense of well-being. Cultural socialization, harmony promotion, prejudice preparation and contact with other groups have all been found to be positive. The promotion of mistrust has been shown to be negative.
