Abstract: Self-revolution is an embodiment of the essential attributes of a proletarian party. The materialist dialectical stance of being “critical and revolutionary” constitutes the spiritual core of self-revolution of Marxist parties and provides methodological guidance for them to revolutionize themselves with courage. This courage to pursue self-revolution is a crucial factor underlying the victorious Long March. Under extremely adverse circumstances, the courage of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to exercise self-revolution at five distinct levels-politics, ideology, military struggle, strategies and tactics-manifests in political character, core stance, volitional qualities and cultural attributes, qualities that collectively represent the concentration and distillation of the Party’s spiritual symbols during the critical periods of the revolution. As a core component of the Marxist theory of party building, self-revolution objectively requires that, in the practice of leading revolution and governance in various countries, the proletarian parties must concretize the “critical and revolutionary” stance in light of the specific realities of their own countries, transforming it into organizational principles and institutional norms that strengthen party building and consolidate leadership. In the process of advancing party building, the thought of self-revolution embedded in the Long March Spirit should be focused on how to address challenges and recalibrate the direction of progress to continuously create a practical paradigm of self-purification, self-improvement, self-revolution and self-enhancement.
