On Poetic Presentation of Spiritual Life and Worldly Charm in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio

Abstract: Worldly misery often entails spiritual splendor, that’s how Pu Songlin presents his miserable life with stories of strange beauty and unique charm in his Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, a collection of short stories in which a sanctuary of fox ghosts of womanly charm portrayed in exotic stories of poetic language to enshrine his ideals for life. By creating such a world of external poetic charm and internal poetic content of fairy tales of cultural depth characterized by contained charm, mystic elegance and aesthetic strangeness, the author gives us artistic delight through his life experience presented in poetic narration.
