Abstract: As historical literature in the form of relics, stone inscriptions record local history and culture. In Yunnan stone inscriptions related to the Marquis Temple of Zhuge Liang the famous strategist in the 3rd century when China was divided into three warring kingdoms have been found, revealing how much this legendary master mind was worshiped in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1911) by people of Yunnan. These stone inscriptions are mainly found in central and west Yunnan. While those found in central Yunnan (including Kunming, Qujing, Chuxiong and Yuxi) reflect the worship for the “enlightenment of a saint,” those found in west Yunnan (mainly Baoshan and Dali) reflect the worship for “blessing of a deity.” Deep down, the worship for Zhuge Liang revealed in these stone inscriptions manifests the worship of people of minority ethnic groups in Yunnan for the Han culture of the heartland. More than promoting unity, progress, integration and development of peoples of Yunnan, this historical and cultural phenomenon inspired colorful folk culture and valuable spirit for peoples of Yunnan.
