The Evolutionary History and Grammaticalization of zhishi as a Disyllabic Structure of shi
    FENG Guangyi, ZHANG Chunyan
    2022, 37(5):  9-14.
    Abstract ( 17 )   PDF (1653KB) ( 3 )
The diachronic development process of zhishi includes four major periods. First, the period of using zhi and shi separately where shi began to be used as a judgment verb. Second, the combination and solidification period of zhi+shi, or the transitional period where the judgment verb shi can be stably modified by the adverb zhi with the semantic focus on shi. Third, the period where zhishi is used as an adverb where the judgment function of shi weakened or disappeared with the semantic focus on zhi; meanwhile the process of semantic abscission of shi constitutes grammaticalization and the grammaticalization of shi also creates necessary conditions for the reanalysis of zhishi. Fourth, the period of zhishi being used as a turning conjunction. Since zhishi was first used as an adverb in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), its usage gradually matured. Later, the meaning of zhishi further weakened while its conjunction use gradually increased until the boundary between zhi and shi eventually disappeared.

Female Images in the Old Style Poems during the War against Japanese Aggression
    ZHANG Ning, ZENG Yun
    2022, 37(5):  33-38.
    Abstract ( 18 )   PDF (1565KB) ( 26 )
The portrayal of women's images in the old style poems during the War against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945) showed women's realistic situation and spiritual ecology after the balance between man and nature, society and culture was broken by the war. Meanwhile women's “existence” in the field of war-torn times was observed. The depiction of female images also reflected the dedication of Chinese women in the war of resistance against Japan, expressed their anti-fascist beliefs, and attacked the numbness and decay of the upper class. The writing of female images in the old style poetry has expanded the subject range of its own creation and promoted the exploration of the subject of the relationship between women and nation in modern Chinese literature.

On the Self-pursuit and Transcendence of Women in the Japanese-occupied Areas- A Study Centered around Su Qing's Ten Years of Marriage and Yang Jiang's Feng Xu
    CHENG Shan
    2022, 37(5):  39-45.
    Abstract ( 30 )   PDF (1699KB) ( 25 )
As literary muses in occupied Shanghai in the 1940s, Su Qing and Yang Jiang aimed at writing about love and women’s married life far from politics and the war-torn world. By making an in-depth explanation of the causes underlying Su Qing's incomplete feminism and Yang Jiang's thorough feminism through comparing Su Qing's novel Ten Years of Marriage and Yang Jiang's play Feng Xu, this paper comes to the conclusion that Su Qing’s halfway female consciousness is due to the contradiction between the writer’s personal modernity and the feudal traditional family as well as her compromise of a single mother’s economic burden while Yang Jiang’s complete female consciousness comes from the insistence of the elite intellectuals under the influence of the new liberal family education, the Western idea of individualism and subjectivity, and influence of the Beijing School culture.

Irreversibility of Rituals of Status Reversal- Taking the Wa inYanglai Village, Cangyuan County as an Example
    LI Hao, LI Zhenhui
    2022, 37(5):  82-91.
    Abstract ( 15 )   PDF (1714KB) ( 3 )
Victor Turner believes that the annual Ritual of Status Reversal has anti-structural characteristics, and the subject status of the ceremony will be subversive. However, during the new year of the Wa in Yanglai, Cangyuan County, the hidden traditional authority turns obvious, the status of the emerging elite is strengthened, and the relationship between man and God is constantly sublimated. The ritual process shows the characteristics of “Irreversibility.” According to the research, a various factors - kinship and geographical relationship of the rural society, folk beliefs such as animism and ancestor worship, the national rural governance policy, and the diversified livelihood - are comprehensively intertwined, resulting in the close cultural network and stable social structure. The Rituals of Status Reversal cannot enable the society to enter the “anti-structure” state and, as a result, the paradox of “Irreversibility” of the Rituals of Status Reversal appears.

Local Knowledge about Preparation of Xuanwei Ham in Mandarin Chinese Documents
    ZHU Heshuang
    2022, 37(5):  101-110.
    Abstract ( 8 )   PDF (1614KB) ( 14 )
Fame and market expansion of Xuanwei Ham were in fact preceded by those of Heqing Ham that had been well sold in west Yunnan, a fact adequately proved by Mandarin Chinese documents of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Completion of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and improved preparation technique enabled it to rapidly seize the market in and out of Yunnan Province. In the period of Republic of China (1912-1949), Xuanwei Ham began to compete for bigger market share with other national brands, such as Jinhua Ham and Rugao Ham. Emergence of canned food and development of local industry and commerce gave birth to more than one hundred ham factories of varying sizes and bigger distributors in Xuanwei County alone and their strong demand for raw materials triggered further innovation of ham preparation technique. On the other side of the coin, the millennium-old preparation procedures were still followed in the rural areas of Xuanwei and other counties. Both the preparation technique and matching fermentation measures were further improved after the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949.

    WANG Heng
    2022, 37(5):  150-155.
    Abstract ( 47 )   PDF (2603KB) ( 24 )
Both Su Shi (1037-1101) and Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) were great figures in the history of calligraphy of China. Although divided by more than four centuries, their works show similar origins. Song of the Red Cliff, a representative work of the former in the walking style, circulated in hands of different collectors, and the latter was one of them. At the beginning of the work, 36 characters were missing. Wen Zhengming, imitating the original style of Su Shi, supplemented them in his own hand with a postscript explaining it. Though close to the original characters, the supplemented ones show differences in method, structure, details and line texture at close scrutiny. By comparing the supplemented characters closest to the original ones, this paper attempts to understand how, why and what Wen chose to learn from Su so as to help future calligraphy learners.
