    Food Studies in Question
    Francoise SABBAN, YUAN Chenkai
    2020, 35(4):  1-6.
    Abstract ( 18 )   PDF (3553KB) ( 5 )
To grasp the meaning of today's food studies, one has to go back to the beginnings of the interest in food culture and history of anthropologists and historians since 1980 both in China and in the West. Thanks to inspiration from the late Prof. Ji Hongkun who had for years led the struggle for the recognition of food science and culture as a respectable academic domain, two perspectives to approaching research on food can be highlighted. The first emphasizes long-lasting meanings of food systems and cultures, and the other deals with the relationships between food, culture and society, considering food essentially as a lens or a tool. What are exactly the role and definition of the so-called “food studies” between these two perspectives in a time when the whole world is food-oriented?

Eating Potatoes Is Patriotic! State, Market and the Common Good in Contemporary China
    Jakob A. KLEIN, YUAN Chenkai
    2020, 35(4):  7-10.
    Abstract ( 20 )   PDF (563KB) ( 9 )
Ethical food consumption has typically been addressed by scholars in the context of alternative food movements, and debates have revolved around the role of capitalist markets in furthering or appropriating these movements' ethical goals. Yet states, too, attempt to shape food consumption in ways that may be understood as ‘ethical', and often do so with the help of market mechanisms. This paper explores attempts since 2015 by the Chinese state to promote the potato as a Chinese staple food. According to China's Ministry of Agriculture, the ethical benefits of the potato include strengthening national food security, furthering environmental sustainability in Chinese agriculture, and improving the nation's dietary health. But how does the reform socialist state go about promoting this ‘foreign tuber', as the potato is known in many dialects, among Chinese eaters? Does the state try to convince citizens that eating potatoes is for their own benefit and rely on the ‘hidden hand of the market' to translate individual self-interest into a greater common good, as historian Rebecca Earle has argued was the case of potato-promotion in eighteenth century Europe? Or does it appeal to citizens' moral values, including their concern with national well-being, strength, and environmental health? And how does it balance the patriotic potential of the potato with its foreign origins and associations with Western cuisines, including fast food? Through an investigation of potato-promotion, this paper seeks to shed light on the relationship in China's contemporary, reform-socialist political culture between state and market, individualism and morality, and nationalism and internationalism.

A Review of Classification of Sichuan Cuisine in the Modern Times
    SHI Zibin
    2020, 35(4):  11-15.
    Abstract ( 55 )   PDF (681KB) ( 22 )
The flavor genre of Sichuan cuisine has been divided in the form of “clique” (bangkou in Chinese) which originated from the clique of the shipping oarsmen on the Yangtze River within Sichuan Province in the modern times. However, the classification criteria have always been various in the Sichuan Cuisine theory, which mainly include several flavor genres such as the Shanghe Clique, the Xiahe Clique, the Dahe Clique, the Xiaohe Clique etc. The theory has not been consensual and conclusional until now. There are big differences among the various divisions, which are not conducive to the development of modern Sichuan cuisine. This paper attempts to propose that modern Sichuan cuisine is composed of new regional cuisines such as Chongqing cuisine, Luzhou cuisine, Chengdu cuisine, and Panzhihua cuisine. They jointly build a modern Sichuan cuisine theory system which may represent the highest artistic achievements in the development of modern Sichuan cuisine.

Folklore regarding the Dragon Boat Festival in the Old Local Chronicles of Yunnan: On the Shape of Mugwort and the “Flour Diet”
    LI Fulun
    2020, 35(4):  16-22.
    Abstract ( 15 )   PDF (885KB) ( 8 )
Folk custom regarding the Dragon Boat Festival recorded in the old local Chronicles of Yunnan has some differences from those of the mainstream Han culture. The shape of mugwort had appeared in different shapes, such as “tiger,” “human,” “dog” and “quan”. Among them, “mugwort like a dog” is the development and change of “mugwort like a tiger” combined with the local cultural reality. “quan-shaped mugwort” is the representation of “Tianshi-shaped mugwort” hidden behind “humanoid mugwort”. On the diet, flour was retained. This reflects the development and evolution of zongzi history and the exchange and collision between different food cultures.

Textual Research on the Kua'ers in the Story “The Foolish Old Man Moving away the Mountains”
    WU Xiaodong
    2020, 35(4):  23-28.
    Abstract ( 34 )   PDF (1264KB) ( 11 )
“The Foolish Old Man Moving away the Mountains” is a fairy tale originated from the Taihang and Wangwu mountains, but its original text should not contain the last part where the two sons of the Kua'ers moved away the mountains because the mountains are still there. The current story text collected in The Works of Lieh Tzu is not the original one. Instead, it is one composed later at another location. As it is out of context, the last part of the story mentioned above was added to it. The Kua'ers are related to Kuafu and Erlang (meaning “two sons”). In central China people still tell the fairy tale “Two Sons Carrying away Two Mountains” where “God the Snakeholder” arguably refers to the Kua'ers.

On the Influence of Creation Myth on the Construction of Shanghai as an “Outstanding Global City”
    WU Yuping
    2020, 35(4):  29-35.
    Abstract ( 15 )   PDF (2563KB) ( 3 )
In early 2016, the “Beginning of Universe – Project of Writing and Dissemination of Chinese Creation Myths” was launched in Shanghai. In the following years, related activities in a number of areas were carried out. This is important to the construction of Shanghai as an “Outstanding Global City.” A closer look at the robust activities related to creation myth in Shanghai finds the underlying reasons: identification of the dragon culture of Shanghai and consistency of its city origin with that of the whole nation. Furthermore, the spirit of Shanghai is the continuance of the national spirit and cultural memory contained within the creation myths. From rites of the above mentioned activities it can be found that dissemination of creation myths has never stopped in Shanghai, which can be attributed to the influence of writing, exhibition and dramatic production of related themes.

Ethical Interpretation of the Images of “Filial Son” and “Rebellious Son” in Modern Novels
    XU Hanhui
    2020, 35(4):  42-46.
    Abstract ( 9 )   PDF (785KB) ( 3 )
During the May 4th Movement, intellectual elites with enlightenment spirit advocated the banners of “science,” “democracy” and “individual liberation” while criticizing the traditional patriarchal ethics. By constructing the typical images of “filial son” and “rebellious son” through vivid novel narration, many writers exposed the backward slavish personality with the themes of “reviewing the father” and “killing the father” to thoroughly deconstruct the prison of feudal patriarchal ethics that held the youth captive, thus carrying forward the modern personality spirit of independence and self-respect.

The Pursuit and Exploration for the Authentic Self- A Further Study on the Theme of Autumn Leaves by Ouyang Tzu
    LI Yao
    2020, 35(4):  47-52.
    Abstract ( 14 )   PDF (923KB) ( 4 )
Autumn Leaves, a collection of Ouyang Tzu's novels, caused a literary battle in Taiwan after its publication. The group represented by the country writers criticized its theme and content, but a closer look at the text reveals that none of the novels is divorced from the theme of “the pursuit and exploration for the authentic self,” and the presentation of this theme proves that Ouyang Tzu is not simply transplanting Western techniques. Besides, the author's exploration and analysis of the characters' psychology also contributed to the development of Taiwan's modernism.

    Abstract ( 11 )   PDF (947KB) ( 4 )
Areas inhabited by minority ethnic groups are characterized by under-developed economy, complex geographical relations, diverse cultures and uneven education, presenting both opportunities and challenges to the construction of socialist core values. Constructing socialist core values is extremely important to the economic development, political identity and cultural integration of ethnic minority areas. The outstanding achievements of Diqing Tibaten Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province in national unity and progress are closely related to the effective construction of socialist core values in the area. The “Diqing Experience” has brought beneficial enlightenment to the construction of socialist core values in other minority areas in China, such as incorporating core values into all work, adhering to the Party's core leadership, strengthening political identity, strengthening the leadership and innovation of the core values for minority cultures, strengthening the awareness of the Chinese national community, and enhancing the endogenous power of constructing core values through education.

A Study on the Academic History of the Chinese Pu People
    LI Yanfeng
    2020, 35(4):  74-79.
    Abstract ( 87 )   PDF (844KB) ( 27 )
The Pu, aka the Baipu, was an ancient ethnic group that lived and multiplied in China's south-central and southwestern regions from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Pu, the Diqiang, the Baiyue and the Threemiao were the four largest ethnic groups in ancient China, among whom only the Pu people had existed here for a very long time before disappearing. The related research of the academic circle is mainly focused on the origin of the Pu, their relationship with other ancient ethnic groups, their development and changes, and so on. Academic research into the Pu and their historical evolution are far from deep, leaving huge room for further study from fresh perspectives in innovative methods and with broader vision. It is, therefore, necessary to conduct a long-term and comprehensive study on the Pu people.

An Elementary Analysis of Family Politics in Kokang, Myanmar
    MEI Ying
    2020, 35(4):  86-90.
    Abstract ( 42 )   PDF (766KB) ( 18 )
In Kokang, Myanmar, ethnical struggles have never stopped and family politics has always been a hot issue, which can mainly be attributed to lack of ethnical identification of the locals, the under-the-desk deconstruction of the military government and the complicated local geographical politics. Among the above mentioned causes, lack of ethnical identification is the fundamental one, for the military government makes use of the missing shared history to deconstruct the society, resulting in loss of social order, persistent family boundary and unreachable common efforts of the locals. This is a lesson to be learnt, as construction of ethnic identification is a hard, complicated process subject to influences from various factional forces, internal and external.

    Abstract ( 14 )   PDF (1145KB) ( 6 )
Yang You was captured in Xianyu Zhongtong's expedition to Yunnan. Due to appreciation by Ge Luofeng, King of Yunnan, he had served successively as the grand secretary of Chongwen Pavilion, the grand tutor and the prime minister. He was given the name Manyou. As one of the most important historical figures, he made significant contribution to the development of Nanzhao's education and the re-establishment of good relations with the Tang Dynasty. Due to lack of historical literature, no complete story of his life is seen in the official record except for fragmented anecdotes in local historical data. An outline of his life and deeds of his descendants are seen through the comprehensive study of Yunnan's local annals and unearthed inscriptions, which is very helpful not only to the study of history of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, but also to the study of history of the Tang and Song dynasties.
