Harmonious Coexistence of Man and Nature: Connotation of Ecological Civilization of the Chinese-style Modernization Interpreted
    QI Daoxin
    2023, 38(2):  1-8.
    Abstract ( 58 )   PDF (1415KB) ( 34 )
More than mere essential characteristic of the Chinese-style modernization, harmonious coexistence of man and nature is the intrinsic requirement for the construction of a modern socialist country in an all-round way. Harmonious coexistence of man and nature is a notion set under the perspective of modernization. Its scientific connotation, therefore, contains the ideas of guidance of coexistence of man and nature, pursuit for shared glory between man and nature, and the inspiration of construction of a beautiful China. At the current stage of development, the concept of harmonious coexistence of man and nature harbors the rationale of its theoretic innovation, the value of concern for the vast majority of people, the civilized sentiment of concern for oneself then the family and finally the whole nation, and the international significance of fairness and justice. The theory of “modernization of harmonious coexistence of man and nature” is thus widely recognized and endowed with great vigor. To promote modernization of harmonious existence of man and nature in the new era, it is necessary that systematic governance in terms of complete, overall and connective thinking be adhered to on the one hand and breakthroughs be made in key areas on the other.

    2023, 38(2):  9-9.
    Abstract ( 20 )   PDF (1532KB) ( 10 )
After the Resistance War against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945) fully broke out, professors of National Southwest Associated University (NSAU) assumed the double responsibilities of saving the nation through war and building the country through academic research. One of their efforts was delivering public speeches to disseminate ideas, publicize war situations of the country and the world, frankly tell people their opinions regarding state affairs, popularize literacy and mobilize young men to join the army. Their speeches enabled the students and the general public to better understand the on-going war, the current situation and the cultural affairs, successfully forging a third-party front on public opinion to help foster among their listeners the idea of “notion of nation” that included: 1) the spirit of the May 4th Movement characterized by pursuit for democracy and science; 2) the political awareness characterized by patriotism and progress; and 3) the great inspiration to urgently fight for national independence. The mass publicity forms centering around speeches of NSAU professors showed the awakening of their national identification and historical commitment and highlighted the notion of nation of saving the country through academic and cultural activities, thus best demonstrating their sincere love for the country.

    ZHOU Jun, WANG Yifan
    2023, 38(2):  18-30.
    Abstract ( 33 )   PDF (2335KB) ( 11 )
The century long history of the Communist Party of China (CPC) gave birth to regionally characteristic and uniquely valuable red culture in Hebei Province. To survey the current status and future tendency of the red culture in Hebei Province, CiteSpace bibliometrics software is used to conduct a visual analysis of databases of CNKI, VIP and Wanfang Data. The results show that study on the red culture of Hebei Province started in 2005 and its development can be divided into three stages: the slow beginning period between 2005 and 2009, the fluctuating development period between 2010 and 2017, and the rapid development period between 2018 and 2022. This study mainly concerns the regional red culture in Hebei Province, integration and development of tourism resources, and college ideological and political courses in terms of content and, in terms of focus, it changes and deepens under influence of policies and gradually becomes a diversified interdisciplinary domain. Problems, though, do exist, such as divided efforts and unbalanced development among different study teams. To tackle these problems in the future, greater attention may be attached to the following aspects of the red culture of Hebei Province in the new era: contemporary significance, material connotation, mode and demonstration of digital immersion education, and red culture tourism.

New Form of Human Civilization: On Civilization Gist of the Chinese-style Modernization
    ZONG Yu
    2023, 38(2):  31-37.
    Abstract ( 23 )   PDF (1407KB) ( 7 )
New form of human civilization is a brand new view on civilization created by the Communist Party of China (CPC) from the lofty perspective of history of civilization development. Departing from the new starting point of the road of the Chinese-style modernization, this new form of human civilization is a natural product under the context of “two overall situations,” the inheritance and sublimation of excellent traditional Chinese culture under the guidance of Marxism, and the surpassing and development of capitalist civilization. In terms of components, this new form of human civilization comprises the perspective of all human beings with the “5-in-1” coordinated development as its core content and promotion of common values for all humanity as its new direction. While pointing out the “new navigation direction” for socialist modernization for China and erecting the “new navigation marks” for world socialism, this new form of human civilization will open up the “new navigation route” for social development for mankind in general.

    2023, 38(2):  48-57.
    Abstract ( 14 )   PDF (2018KB) ( 3 )
By comparing the World Bank’s Doing Business reports in recent years, it is found that the index of “access to credit” in China has been lower than the overall ranking, which has a negative impact on the overall business environment in China. A further study of secondary indexes reveals the problems of chattel guarantee registration dispersion, lack of marketability and legal protection in credit information system. Based on the development of China’s existing credit information system, this paper puts forward suggestions on establishing multi-level guarantee registration institutions and promoting the construction of Internet credit system from the perspective of improving China’s credit information environment, so as to create a legalized and international business environment.

Women Earning Their Living in the Ming and Qing Dynasties Explored
    LI Shuang
    2023, 38(2):  71-79.
    Abstract ( 22 )   PDF (1400KB) ( 17 )
Intellectual women earning their living is a phenomenon that can not be overlooked in the history of the life of Chinese women, especially in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) when they were forced to do so either because their husbands died, their husbands served office afar, their husbands could not make proper living or because their family economy had failed. They were not only capable of running the whole family, but also showed great wisdom and courage doing so. This phenomenon not only helped promoting women's social position as well as stability and future prosperity of a family, but also, to a certain extent, helped formation and development of women's social circles. Although their means of making living was limited compared with that of men, and their deeds were not infrequently mocked by the public, their achievements can never be covered up. Their appearance marked the rise of women's social standing and the transformation of women's image, and provided a new perspective for later generations to better understand the history of women of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Constructed Love: On the Narrowed Expressive Function of Kouxian of People of Minority Ethnic Groups of Southwest China;- Taking the Tibetan, the Qiang and the Yi Peoples as Examples
    CAO Hongyu, XU Jun
    2023, 38(2):  80-88.
    Abstract ( 15 )   PDF (1628KB) ( 11 )
Kouxian, or jew’s harp, is an important instrument of people of minority ethnic groups of southwest China to express feelings and emotions. In recent years, however, its expressive functions are undergoing a narrowing process to express love between men and women only. Taking people of three minority ethnic groups-the Qiang of Beichuan County, the Yi of Butuo County and the Tibetans of Zhouqu County-as research object and using participant observation in conjunction with in-depth interview as research method, this research applies the grounded theory tool to analyzing the constructional reasons underlying the expressive narrowing of kouxian based on restoration of the original connotation of the expressive functions of the instrument in question. Subjectively, socially marginalized women have greater desire to voice their emotions through kouxian and, objectively, both the consumer media and gaze of the Other in tourism development are oriented to narrow down its expressive functions. This way, the expression of love between the sexes stands out to cast a shadow on the otherwise versatile expressive power of kouxian, consequently narrowing both the object and meaning of the instrument.

On the Influence of Saussure Sign Arbitrariness on Nomenclature and Coinage
    GUO Chujian, LI Mingchen
    2023, 38(2):  97-104.
    Abstract ( 12 )   PDF (1404KB) ( 2 )
Arbitrariness is the most important basic feature of language sign, which dominates the linguistics of the whole language. The arbitrariness of sign mainly refers to the arbitrariness of the connection between signifier and signified and the arbitrariness of the division and connection of signs in the language system. The arbitrariness of symbols determines the value of symbols in the system and determines that language is a pure value system. Nomenclature is one of the most common linguistic phenomena. The influence of symbol arbitrariness on nomenclature is mainly manifested in that the naming scope is more widely available, the naming process is simpler and more efficient, and the naming result is more varied.

    2023, 38(2):  105-110.
    Abstract ( 41 )   PDF (1505KB) ( 12 )
As a classic literary masterpiece, Records of the Grand Historian has exerted a profound influence on the later generations. Based on Toury's translational norms theory, this paper makes a descriptive comparative study of the two selected versions of the Records of the Grand Historian by Yang Xianyi, Dai Naidie and Burton Watson respectively. This paper analyzes the differences and similarities between the two groups of translators in the selection of the target text under the restriction of the preliminary norm, the different translation tendencies of the target text under the influence of the initial norm, and the different translation strategies used in the translation process under the impact of the operational norm. The results show that the translational norms have obvious influence on the two groups of translators, resulting in the differences of the two versions. This research can shed some light on understanding the influence of translational norms on the process and result of translation.

Mu Dan's "Home" Image from the Perspective of "Space Poetics"
    LIU Xiangxi
    2023, 38(2):  111-116.
    Abstract ( 28 )   PDF (1412KB) ( 9 )
In Poetics of Space, Bachelard uses imaginative phenomenology to open up a new method for poetry interpretation, and drags the material space at the architectural level to the rich spiritual space. In Mu Dan's poems, letters and diaries, the author finds a lot of "home" images. From the perspective of phenomenology, we find his unique individual experience and imagination of the times, old poetry complex, human feelings, feeling expression and resistance consciousness, which opens a door for us to reach Mu Dan's deep subconscious level of thinking.

The Relationship between Undergraduates' Individual Characteristics and Academic Performance in Blended Learning: A Chain Mediation Model
    XIE Lidong, LI Lei
    2023, 38(2):  117-124.
    Abstract ( 23 )   PDF (1504KB) ( 15 )
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between undergraduates' learning engagement, adaptation, and self-efficacy and academic performance in blended learning. We conducted a questionnaire survey among 653 students who studied the course Modern Educational Technology at a university. Then, the measured values of learning engagement, self-efficacy, and adaptation were paired with the course score. These data were analyzed with correlation analysis and structural equation model. The results show that: 1) Academic achievement is positively correlated with learning adaptation, but not with learning self-efficacy or learning engagement; 2) Learning adaptation significantly positively predicts academic achievement; 3) Learning engagement can indirectly influence academic performance through the full mediating effect of learning adaptation, but the effect is weak; and 4) Learning self-efficacy indirectly affects academic performance through learning adaptation and “learning engagement → learning adaptation”, but the total effect is weak. It is believed that learning adaptation is a key factor affecting academic achievement in blended learning.

    Abstract ( 27 )   PDF (1607KB) ( 5 )
As a branch of history, environmental history has developed in line with the "new liberal arts", which advocates the intersection of literature and science and the integration of innovation. At present, Chinese environmental history is blossoming under the exploration of Chinese and Western scholars, but there is a tendency for the discipline to solidify in specific studies, and the development of the discipline is facing challenges. In this context, Zhou Qiong and Geng Jin's An Outline of Chinese Environmental History is a culmination of the authors’ years of teaching experience in the form of a textbook on environmental history with Chinese characteristics. The book, not only sorting out the historical and environmental changes in China but also achieving the correctness of the genre structure and specific cases, as well as the innovation of the research perspective, content structure and academic interests, complements the long-standing gaps in previous textbooks on the general history of China's environment and sufficiently reflects the exploration and practice of multidisciplinary interaction in the context of the construction of the “New Liberal Arts”.
