“Chinese Cuisine” in Scholarly View of Chinese Cookbook- Keynote Speech at the “Chinese Cuisine” Release to the World’ Event, Zhengzhou, 2018
    ZHAO Rongguang
    2020, 35(1):  1-5.
    Abstract ( 26 )   PDF (372KB) ( 18 )
This article was delivered as a keynote speech at the conference themed ‘Chinese Cuisine Release to the World’ in Zhengzhou in 2018 organized by the Chinese Cuisine Association. It highlights some terms, such as Chinese Cuisine, Scholarly Area of Cookbook and Studies of Chinese Cookbook, so as to emphasize their importance to the development of the catering culture and construction of culinary art as a discipline. It stands on the point that research on the Chinese cuisine should meet the needs of the public, and be adapted to the general trends. It points out that Yuan Mei’s Suiyuan Shidan and Buwei Chao-Yang’s How to Cook and Eat in Chinese are the most classic Chinese cookbooks for the ancient and modern times respectively. By inspecting the Chinese Cuisine in scholarly view of Chinese Cookbook, it is found that city is the foundation of the culinary culture. That means any central city with a historical heritage must have its specific culinary and catering culture; its surrounding areas will naturally be influenced and a food culture circle be formed that covers local dishes. Therefore, those renowned dishes named after provinces or cities have historical origins in food production and consumption, meet the market demand and benefit both the public and the government. Even a small area and a minor city can have their special cuisine. It follows, displays and develops the law of “naming dishes after places.”

An Analysis on Li Tiaoyuan’s Influence on Sichuan Cuisine in the Qing Dynasty from His My Retired Life
    ZHU Duosheng
    2020, 35(1):  6-12.
    Abstract ( 26 )   PDF (517KB) ( 32 )
In the paper, we analyze Li Tiaoyuan`s factly implications of Sichuan Cuisine through his retired life. After Li Tiaoyuan retired, he had enough money and political resources, so he could trip to where he wanted and met many local officials as his friends. Actually, Li Tiaoyuan must have been to many banquets together with these officials, but we now cannot find much description about Sichuan Cuisine in his works. According to his My Retired Life, Li Tiaoyuan had interest in writing and collecting books, but paid little attention to his food life. On this basis, we can draw the conclusion that Li Tiaoyuan had little influence on Sichuan Cuisine in the Qing dynasty (1644―1911).

Image Landscape Narrative of the Yi Mythology in Development of Cultural Tourism
    CHEN Yongxiang, YIN Ying
    2020, 35(1):  22-28.
    Abstract ( 26 )   PDF (463KB) ( 10 )
The mythology system of the Yi people is stored in their genesis epics and hero epics. Elements of these epics and myths are widely used in development of resorts of cultural tourism, as image landscape narrative to name or form tourist attractions for example. In these examples the most used images include totems in the Yi genesis epics, such as the tiger, the eagle and the gourd, Ahpudumu – the earliest Yi ancestor – and his six sons as well as Zhigeahlu the mythical hero. Equally important landscape components are images of fire and colors, which are objects of primitive worship of the Yi. In tourist and cultural image landscape narrative, the ancient divine narrative identified by a whole nation as structurally significant is secularized, i.e. its original nationally identified cultural significance is dissolved and reconstructed and the ceremonial and systematic mythological narrative is fragmented into image landscape narrative. In this process, the traditional folk cultural resources are transformed into modern economic resources and eventually realize their economic value by satisfying spiritual and aesthetic needs of contemporary consumers through their transmutation into important spiritual and cultural consumer goods for modern human beings pursuing poetic and scenic beauty of a land far away and exotic.

    Abstract ( 19 )   PDF (474KB) ( 7 )
Landscapes relate legends or, to be more exact, they are images and processes of birth of legends that provoke historical imagination and cultural reflection by presenting legend elements. Moreover, legends introduce certain spiritual connotation and symbolic significance into landscapes, giving the latter magic and divine views. Combination of landscape and legend can induce cultural identification and thus facilitating construction of unique regional cultural spirit.

On the “New Concept Craze” of Literary Criticism in the 1980s and Its “Limitation”
    PENG Haiyun
    2020, 35(1):  40-45.
    Abstract ( 20 )   PDF (442KB) ( 19 )
Compared with the study of other phenomena, trends of thought and schools of literary criticism in the 1980s, the academic circle have paid little attention to the “new concept craze” in literary criticism in the 1980s, the hidden level of some “limitations” of the problem in particular. This area has become almost a “forgotten corner.” From the perspective of wholeness, this paper re-sorts, analyzes and ponders upon the “new concept craze” of literary criticism in the 1980s. There are three kinds of limitations: mistaking “old words” for “new words”, equating “new concept” with “new idea”, and reproducing some political culture “ghosts” in deep history. These “limitations” in the “new concept craze” of literary criticism in the 1980s more or less “passed down” to the literary criticism since the 1990s. A deep reflection on these “limitations” is of great significance to the construction of the discourse system of localized Chinese contemporary literary criticism.

Calls For Those PainsAn: Interpretation of Yu Hua's Novel The Seventh Day
    ZHAO Jinghong
    2020, 35(1):  46-50.
    Abstract ( 135 )   PDF (466KB) ( 39 )
Yu Hua's novel The Seventh Day is based on news reports, and tells us of the sufferings of those small potatoes fairly far down the social pecking order, and of the misery of our country. It is written from the perspective of the dead with absurd narration. The novel, with incisive and warm wording, presents a re-examination and introspection on reality to its readers. It manifests the author's sense of social responsibility and his passion for the lower class and expresses the author's sincere devotion to writing Chinese stories. Unfortunately, the author immerses himself too much in reality to retrieve the news theme from the perspective of literary aesthetics. After being published the novel endures criticism and enjoys praise at the same time. It has been criticized a lot.

The Selfhood, Contemporaneity and Firmness of “Xiacun Experience”- Rereading Ding Ling’s When I Was in Xiacun
    ZU Bingjun, MA Huihui
    2020, 35(1):  51-54.
    Abstract ( 22 )   PDF (354KB) ( 5 )
Dingling's “Xiacun experience” is self-centered, contemporary and firm. Selfhood refers to the fact that Zhen Zhen was captured by the Japanese army, which is very similar to Ding Ling's own experience of being arrested and imprisoned in Nanjing. After Ding Ling was released from prison, many people saw Ding Ling in a very similar way, which made Ding Ling very painful. Contemporariness refers to the fact that Ding Ling was criticized repeatedly after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and even regarded as an “anti-Party member”, “right-party member” and “left-Party member”. The reason lies in some people's residual consciousness of feudalism. Firmness refers to the fact that Ding Ling never lost hope of life even in adversity.

On Female Subject Consciousness in Feminism
    YAN Li
    2020, 35(1):  55-59.
    Abstract ( 109 )   PDF (441KB) ( 53 )
Female subject consciousness is the foundation and core concept in feminist literature and criticism. Through making a survey on the history of feminism, this essay elucidates that the core idea of female subject consciousness is that women have realized that all human beings are equal in politics, society and economy. Therefore, the female should fight for their rights to be the master of their own fate. Female subject consciousness not only inspires the female to pursue independent life, but also urges them to strive for inclusive but transcendental gender values. Based on indigenization and Westernization, Chinese critics interpret the female consciousness in diverse ways.

On Shakespeare’s Plays from the Perspective of Cultural Criticism
    KE Xin
    2020, 35(1):  60-66.
    Abstract ( 25 )   PDF (542KB) ( 4 )
As a research perspective or a research method, cultural criticism is not the study of cultural noumenon, but a macro examination and exploration of literary works from the perspective of history and culture. It will be beneficial to enrich and condense the existing research results to make reasonable use of Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare’s dramas can be divided into three periods: the early period, the middle period and the late period. This paper summarizes the works of different periods of Shakespeare’s creation, and makes an in-depth analysis of their creation style, background and characteristics. The research shows that the themes of Shakespeare’s early works are bright and optimistic, while those of the middle period mainly negative and the later dramas romantic and illusory respectively.

Literary Aesthetic Criticism of Joseon Poet Xu Juzheng
    WANG Cheng
    2020, 35(1):  67-71.
    Abstract ( 17 )   PDF (490KB) ( 5 )
Xu Juzheng, a literary theorist of the early Joseon Dynasty who was much influenced by the Chinese literary theories, argued that “writing categories vary across dynasties” and “styles vary across writing categories.” He examined the relation between the Tao and writing, insisting on the importance of the Tao and contending that writing is the vehicle of the Tao while the Tao is the key point to writing. His other contentions include the idea that “writing helps the state.” His points were highly logical as they are presented in the negative arguments followed by positive ones.

There are over 38,200 Ci-poems by 954 poets collected in Yongzheng and Qianlong Volume of The Complete Ci-poems of the Qing Dynasty, which is a comprehensive and respectable collection. However, pretermission is still unavoidable as the quantity of the works written in the Qing Dynasty was great. In this article, 62 Ci-poems written by seven authors are offered to supplement this omission.

On Re-establishment of Difficulty Degree of Verse Composition- Poetic Revelation of the Crescent School
    QIAO Junyu
    2020, 35(1):  80-84.
    Abstract ( 14 )   PDF (501KB) ( 3 )
To a large extent, the movement advocating free verse in vernacular Chinese lowered the difficulty of verse composition, as it did the artistic quality of new poetry. The Crescent School, on the contrary, advocated metrical verse, a counter-movement against the careless new poetry composition trends by setting requirements on verse composition difficulty, re-establishing poetic styles and standardizing new poetry writing. Poetic revelation of this counter-movement deserves our close attention.

A Review of Research on the Dulong Language in China
    ZHANG Jinfu, LIU Qiao
    2020, 35(1):  85-90.
    Abstract ( 34 )   PDF (480KB) ( 16 )
As one of the Tibetan-Burmese languages of the Sino-Tibetan language family, the Dulong language has attracted attention of some scholars as early as the 1940s, and some academic achievements have been made. After sorting out the existing research results, it is found that study of the Dulong language involves six aspects: its relations, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, mother tongue ability and language variation. But as a whole, its study is still scattered as there is still a lack of research on its pronunciation, vocabulary, case markers, language variation, dialect, local language, mother tongue use, preservation, and language landscape, to name just a few.

On Succession of the Yi Chieftains (Tusi)- Chieftains of the Feng and the Na Chieftain Families of Wuding, Yunnan as Examples
    YANG Fuwang
    2020, 35(1):  97-104.
    Abstract ( 19 )   PDF (625KB) ( 6 )
Wuding County, Yunnan Province is different from the rest of the country in terms of both geographical surroundings and human environment. In history, it was a middle zone between areas ruled by local officials (tuguan) and those administered by circulating officials (liuguan) appointed by dynasties of heartland China. This two ruling patterns coexisted and their jurisdictions often overlapped each other. As a result of repeated rebellions of the Feng family, the central government replaced the local officials with circulating ones. Finding it difficult to cover the consequent high administrating budgets, the central government of the early Qing Dynasty (1644―1911) established a number of Yi chieftains (tusi) as local administrators, among whom later rose the Na family. One of the central issues of continuance of the chieftain families was succession, choice of heir in particular. Many of the internal conflicts, as a matter of fact, resulted from disputes over choice of heir. To legitimize, standardize and institutionalize chieftain succession practices, the Qing government issued official seals and letters of attorney to the chieftains.

A Millennium-old Opera Reverberating in the Three-river Land- Review of A Survey on Duochong Opera
    YANG Linjun
    2020, 35(1):  105-111.
    Abstract ( 18 )   PDF (628KB) ( 3 )
History of duochong opera dates back 12 centuries when the Sangye Temple was first built. Duochong was originally a dance accompanied by Tibetan ballads that spread to the region in west Yunnan traversed by three rivers – the Jinsha, the Lancang and the Nujiang – with the expanding Tibetan influence. Elementary results of the survey of the project team show that this opera is still circulating in both the Naxi and the Naxi-Tibetan villages in the upper reaches of the Jinsha River and the Lancang River. The whole opera consists of 12 acts, including 108 songs, both major and minor preludes as well as four dramas. Themes of the opera concern timeless and universal values, such as progressiveness, industry, unity, harmony, etiquettes and advocacy of man-man, man-nature and man-society friendship. Duochong opera has now been listed and protected as provincial intangible cultural heritage, but difficulties have been encountered regarding its research, reorganization, personnel training, exchange project, inheritance and innovation. To overcome these difficulties, joint efforts such as government leadership, social support and popular heritance are needed.

    2020, 35(1):  118-124.
    Abstract ( 24 )   PDF (613KB) ( 4 )
In recent years, minority village sport has been playing a connecting role in sightseeing and other agricultural and recreational activities, giving birth to various development modes and business categories in rural tourism. Among them minority sports with cultural connotation stand out to represent minority ethnic culture to some extent. As a result, it has become a common sense that minority villages be protected and identification with their own ethnic groups be recognized. How to promote development in this respect, however, is an issue of some challenge. To ensure sustainable development of minority villages, it is, therefore, imperative that vitality of excellent traditional minority village sports be emphasized and reinforced.

The boarding schools, as the most important activity areas of the boarders, whether appropriate or not, are directly related to the students’ health and development, body and mind. Compared with students of other age groups, young boarders have more noticeable problems. A survey of rural boarding primary schools in Chuxiong discovers that the young boarding students of the current rural primary schools do not adapt to the schools and their problems include: widespread passive adaptation, lack of school belonging, learning output unmatched to input and prominent learning problems. Solutions include: larger investment to improve conditions of the schools, better management, frequent communication with parents, encouraging the students to establish friendship with other students, and advocating students' self-education effort. In short, joint efforts are necessary to help the young boarding students adapt to their boarding schools better.

The Shadows of Ships on the Southwest Silk Road- On Modern Shipping of the Lancang-Mekong River
CHE Lin, QI Ying, WANG Yan
    2020, 35(1):  145-152.
    Abstract ( 24 )   PDF (683KB) ( 6 )
Most of the Lancang-Mekong River in Yunnan is difficult to cross and navigate due to its rapid currents and the high mountains on both banks. There are few records of shipping on the Lancang-Mekong River in history. In its middle and upper reaches we are mainly talking about crossing instead of shipping. There were at least 82 ancient ferries along it in Yunnan in history. Its lower reaches are gentle and lower in elevation, thus some of its sections are possible for distant shipping. Historically, Szemao was an important tea and horse trade center on this waterway that led to Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. Now it has become an integral stop on the Southwest Silk Road connecting China with the southeast Asian countries.

Water Conservancy Group and Rural Society: Taking the Water Conservancy Disputes in Lufeng County, Yunnan Province in the Qing Dynasty as an Example
    LIU Jianli
    2020, 35(1):  153-160.
    Abstract ( 18 )   PDF (681KB) ( 4 )
In the Qing Dynasty (1644―1911), water conservancy disputes occurred many times in Lufeng County, Yunnan Province. First, the water conservancy group led by Zhongtun and the village union of Luxitun-Gongbingcun competed for the right of control of the water resources. Finally, under the premise of not changing the “Water Division Principle of Three to Seven”, the officials and the local people jointly discussed for solutions. Later, there were water disputes within the Zhongtun Group. Under the official mediation, the “Water Division Principle of Two to Eight” was improved. The resolution of water disputes has enabled us to see the connotation of water division principles, the cooperation and competition between and within different groups, and the power structure of the rural society.
